Get to know Ardbeg

Ardbeg's from the Kupsch Whisky Hall of Fame and general information about the Ardbeg Distillery.

The Ardbeg Distillery

Ardbeg's story goes back to its beginnings with bootleggers and smugglers in the 1790s. At some point around this point in time, the predecessor of the "Ardbeg Distillery" was picked up by the customs authorities during a raid and discontinued. Then, in the early 1800s, a legal version of the Ardbeg Distillery was founded by John Macdougall. The Ardbeg Distillery was then family-owned until the mid-1900s. In 1977 Ardbeg was then completely taken over by Hiram Walker and closed in the years 1981-1989. After a further opening and closing, the Ardbeg Distillery was then bought in 1997 by McDonald & amp; Muir reopened and handed over to the successor as part of the overall package of Glenmorangie plc in 2004. This was Mo & euml; t Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

Ardbeg's taste profile

Ardbeg has long been considered the smokiest and peatiest whisky of all. After 1975 the proportion of smoke in Ardbeg whiskies decreased somewhat and it is no longer the front runner in terms of smokiness. However, the Ardbeg whiskies are still among the smokiest and peatiest single malt Scotch whiskies in the upper range. At Ardbeg Distillery, emphasis is placed on a good balance between smokiness and sweetness. With great, one-off special bottlings like the Traigh Bhan series, the Ardbeg Distillery shows anew how Islay whisky can taste.
